RFC

RFC stands for Request for Comments. These are the best we have as "standards" for the complex space the internet has become. You can see the listings of all RFC's here.

Historically RFC's come from isi.edu (internet sciences institute or something like that) and were distributed by their FTP service, today those are still found there. Also iana.org is a place to look for RFC's.
