The majority of hacks you will find on this site are surrounding UNIX based OSs (operating systems), which is quite different from Microsoft's Windows operating systems. There is much religion about what qualifies an OS to be unix based, but I will leave that for other forums. For our purposes, it will generally refer to GNU/Linux, Mac OS X and the *BSDs.
