If you're using a Debian based operating system with dpkg, and you want to do a re-install, try the following:

# dpkg --get-selections > installed.software.log

and then on the new system

# dpkg --set-selections < installed-software.log
# dselect update
# dselect-upgrade

This will only work with the same version of Debian, as well as the same sources.list.
