Vlan is a virtual LAN. It is an encapsulation of ethernet within ethernet. A switch can offer a vlan to a host and offer the same vlan to a router and no other host on the same switch can get that vlans traffic for packet inspection as an example. Usually a switch has a vlan trunk between it and the router or another switch.
