Official FreeBSD Handbook version

Our condensed and more dangerous version of upgrading from FreeBSD 5.4 to 6.0 (but should apply to any version changes, just change the RELENG_6). Do a backup first.:

# grep -v ^# /etc/stable-supfile
*default host=cvsup11.FreeBSD.org
*default base=/var/db
*default prefix=/usr
*default release=cvs tag=RELENG_6
*default delete use-rel-suffix
*default compress
src-all
# cvsup /etc/stable-supfile
# rm -rf /usr/obj
# cd /usr/src
# make buildworld
# make buildkernel
# make installkernel
# reboot

when the machine is coming up, use "boot -s" to boot into super user mode.

# mergemaster -p
# make installworld
# mergemaster
# reboot
